About the doctor

Dr. Lim specializes in colorectal and anal diseases treatment. He is an expert at laparoscopic colorectal resection surgery as well as management of haemorrhoids, anal fistula and anal fissure. He is also an expert at gastrointestinal endoscopy. Dr. Lim has a special interest in managing defaecatory disorders such as bowel incontinence, constipation, rectal prolapse and pelvic floor spasm. He is also an expert at endoanal ultrasound, which is often used in managing patients with anal fistula and bowel incontinence.
Currently, Dr. Lim serves as the President of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Coloproctology (APFCP), which is the organization consisting of the national societies of colorectal surgeons in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The APFCP organizes a biennial medical conference to further the education of colorectal surgeons in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Lim is also the President of the Society for Continence Singapore (SFCS), which is a charity in Singapore that raises awareness of and improves care for all sufferers of urinary and bowel incontinence in Singapore. Dr. Lim is a former President of the Society of Colorectal Surgeons of Singapore. He continues to contribute to patient care by representing the Academy of Medicine Singapore in various workgroups with the Ministry of Health, Singapore.
Dr. Lim is very passionate about improving the quality of his patients’ care. In caring for his patients, Dr. Lim has always maintained a steadfast principle, “Make decisions for your patients as if they are your loved ones. If your decision is not good enough for your loved one, it is not good enough for your patient.” For his dedication toward patient care, he has received numerous awards for excellence in patient care through the years.
Dr. Lim graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1995 and obtained his Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, FRCS (Glasg), in 1999. After completing his Advanced Specialty Training in General Surgery in 2003, Dr. Lim was conferred a SGH Fellowship to further his training in management of functional defaecatory disorders and minimally invasive colorectal surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. Upon returning from Australia, Dr. Lim worked as a consultant in the Department of Colorectal Surgery, SGH.
Dr. Lim’s passion for colorectal surgery stems from his desire to help cure patients with colorectal cancer. Convinced of the superior outcome of minimally invasive surgery for patients, Dr. Lim worked tirelessly with like-minded colleagues and was instrumental in starting laparoscopic and robotic colorectal cancer surgery in SGH. He spearheaded the creation of a system for performing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery in SGH to optimize patient outcomes. Today, most colorectal cancer operations in Singapore are performed by laparoscopic surgery.
Dr. Lim has a strong interest in continuing medical education. He served as the Director of Research in the Department of Colorectal Surgery, SGH. Dr. Lim currently serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Surgery, NUS. He is also a Visiting Consultant to the Department of Surgery at Sengkang General Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Dr. Lim was instrumental in creating the medical curriculum in Colorectal Surgery for the Duke-NUS Graduate School of Medicine.
One of Dr. Lim’s other interests is in the management of patients with functional bowel disorders such as bowel incontinence and constipation. In 2008, Dr. Lim started the Pelvic Floor Disorder Service, SGH, together with specialists from the departments of Urology and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. This is the world’s first multi-disciplinary clinical service providing a holistic service to patients suffering from complex functional disorders of the pelvis. He served as the director from the inception until his resignation from SGH in 2011.
